Restoration fails again … for another famous painting

In recent years, there have been several cases in Spain where works of art are ruined by restoration.

In 2012, in the northeastern city of Borja, a 19th-century mural entitled “Look at this person” was severely damaged by a “restoration” operation by an elderly local woman.

As a result, the work became known worldwide as “The Monkey Christ.”

The Spanish Baroque Painting Association (ACRE) wrote on Twitter that “restoration is not a professional restoration,” and Palencia-based conservator Iranos Argud said, “Restoration is not a repair. Restoration is internationally approved. We must comply with the standards that have been set, and we must also comply with the standards applied by the IPCE (Spanish Cultural Heritage Association) and other accreditation bodies in Spain. “
